Manchester United's prime target Kevin Strootman says he isn't using Roma as a stepping stone to greater things and everybody wants to play for Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The name-dropping of the two La Liga giants might be a blow to some United supporters given the certainty among many that Strootman would become an Old Trafford player in either January or the summer.
But the Dutchman denies the notion that he joined Roma from PSV to get noticed but admits the top clubs don't go looking in Holland as much as they would in Serie A in Italy.
Speaking to Voetbal international, Strootman said: "Of course, everyone wants to go to Barcelona or Real Madrid, but they don't come quickly to the Eredivisie."
"Sometimes there is the odd exception, but mostly the rule is that those sort of clubs scout at a higher level. I don't see Roma as totally an intermediate step, but I think a player who performs well here will earn a reputation at the top level quicker.
"In these types of competitions [Serie A and the Champions League] you just learn a lot," he added.
Whilst certain sources close to the deal believe Strootman will eventually join the club, it is sure to be a saga that drags on and on throughout January and into next summer's transfer window.
