Man United offer confirmed, manager insists January deal is done

Manchester United transfer rumours have been somewhat thin on the ground during the January transfer window so far. There has been little concrete stuff and the majority of what has been about has been old stuff dragged up again to fill space. In all honesty, at Sport Witness we've seen far more half reliable reports about Liverpool and Tottenham moving for players than Manchester United. It could be a product of the club's new pact for secrecy but even then there's usually some kind of leak from agents, family or friends on the other side of the deal.

Louis van Gaal is thought to need a defender and there'd be little point buying one that wasn't top class. The reports about Varane interest at the moment are baseless because they come from a Marca article which didn't exist, a product of a misunderstanding when someone was doing a press review. However, it's been run with since.

The other top defender rumour about has been Mats Hummels and there have been claims of a bid this week. Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari had said so and then his words were picked up by several British newspapers and the story has snowballed from there. We asked him to tell us a little more and he said "The proposal belongs to a couple of days ago. Borussia Dortmund doesn't want to give him. Manchester United will insist because he's the priority for Louis van Gaal."

Van Gaal sounds like he's insisting the deal is done but Manchester United will find that hard to manage during January.
