Shinji Kagawa feels he was let down by David Moyeslast season at Manchester United and admitted his heart had always remained with Borussia Dortmund.
After spending two years at Old Trafford, Kagawa returned to Dortmund this summer for £8m and immediately settled straight back into life in the Bundeliga by scoring on his return debut.
Kagawa arrived at Old Trafford as one of the Bundesliga’s brightest stars but failed to build on that at United and the Japanese playmaker has made it clear he felt Moyes didn’t help his progress in Manchester.
“My decision was clear, I wanted to return to Borussia Dortmund and only to Borussia Dortmund,” he said after completing his move back to Germany.
“I want to achieve success with this club again, and with no other.
“Only facts matter in football, stats, goals, assists, titles, and a lot was missing in this regard.
“That was probably why they no longer included me in their plans.
“Everybody knows that my second year at Manchester United was particularly difficult.
“The manager did not really count on me, and the team was also on a bad run.
“That means I am all the more delighted to be back. My heart had remained at Borussia Dortmund anyway.”
When Kagawa arrived at United, many fans felt he could become the playmaker link between the midfield and attack that United missed so badly but unfortunately he was never able to fulfil his undoubted potential.
Back in the Bundesliga where he is comfortable, Kagawa will shine but his United career will always be remembered as one that underwhelmed and didn’t live up to the expectation which brought him to Old Trafford in the the first place.
