Mats Hummels has been linked with a Manchester United move more than he has with any other club. In turn, Manchester United were linked more with Mats Hummels during the last transfer window than they were any other defender, including a couple they actually signed!
It's because the deal makes sense to many. Hummels is one of Europe's best defenders and Manchester United have dearly lacked someone commanding in their back-line, especially since the summer exits of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
The 25 year old has a contract until 2017 with Borussia Dortmund and the German club have a recent history of being pressured, and even forced, into losing their best players. Borussia Dortmund and Jurgen Klopp would dearly love to keep Hummels for as long as possible, maybe his whole career, but the player hasn't ruled out a move in the future.
He's been speaking to Germany's Transfermarkt and, given the repeated rumours of a move, mainly to Manchester United, Hummels was asked to comment on his future. With an eye to how others have left Borussia Dortmund, and how Marco Reus may still do, the defender made reference to not needing a buyout clause because he'd want everything above board and in the open.
"I would have one if I had insisted. But I decided against it deliberately.
"There is currently no club in the world where I would be happier. If I eventually want to go somewhere else, then I would like the proceeds to be 100% fair and open."
Hummels right now is "super happy", if Manchester United are to convince then they'll have to have Borussia Dortmund onside and that's not going to be an easy task.
