A demolition in pictures: Roma 1-7 Bayern Munich

In the summer it was the national team dumping hosts Brazil out of the World Cup; this time,Bayern Munich made a statement of intent in the Champions League atter destroying Rudi Garcia's highly-rated Roma side by the same scoreline.

Roma 0-1 Bayern (Robben 8'): A fantastic swerving effort by the Dutchman leaves Morgan De Sanctis with no chance.

Arjen Robben celebrates the opening goal against Roma.

Roma 0-2 Bayern (Goetze 23'): The man who scored the World Cup winner pops up again to finish Mueller's ball.

Mario Goetze finishing against Roma

Roma 0-3 Bayern (Lewandowski 25'): The Pole nods in Bernat's cross and we're only just in the second quarter.

Robert Lewandowski makes it 3-0 for Bayern Munich at Roma.

Roma 0-4 Bayern (Robben 30'): He'll never win the Ballon d'Or, but the Dutchman is brilliant. He gets his second after racing on to Lewandowski's pass.

Arjen Robben scores his second and Bayern's fourth at Roma.

Roma 0-5 Bayern (Mueller pen. 36'): In a moment of eerie symmetry, Mueller - who also scored when Germany beat Brazil - converts a penalty after a handball by Manolas. Like Germany, Bayern are 5-0 up and it's not even half time yet.

Thomas Mueller scores a penalty against Roma

Roma 1-5 Bayern (Gervinho 66'): The former Arsenal man with a scant consolation goal for Roma. Muted.

Gervinho scored Roma's only goal against Bayern.

Roma 1-6 Bayern (Ribery 78'): The Frenchman gets in on the act as Bayern swiftly cut back that Roma goal.

Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich scores their sixth goal at Roma.

Roma 1-7 Bayern (Shaqiri 80'): Moments after coming off the bench, the Swiss star completes the rout on a miserable night for Roma.

Xherdan Shaqiri of Bayern Munich finds the net against Roma.

So, all in all, a horrific night for the Romans.

And what's worse is that they have to do it all over again, in Bayern's back yard, in a fortnight. Ouch
