Manchester United target Ilkay Gundogan could be forced out of Borussia Dortmund due to the fitness and sharpness of other players.
Manchester United are once again being linked with a move for Ilkay Gundogan as an alternative for Kevin Strootman and Arturo Vidal.
United boss Louis van Gaal has been linked with moves for the Roma and Juventus stars, but Gundogan is viewed as a solid alternative as he eyes a return to competitive action with BVB.
Gundogan has returned to the Dortmund reserve side after an extended spell out with injuries and reports are now suggesting that he could struggle to win his place back in Dortmund’s midfield due to the presence of three players.
“Dortmund have been struggling for form in the Bundesliga, losing four of their first seven matches, and Gundogan faces a challenge to win his place back in the starting line-up against the likes of Shinji Kagawa, Nuri Sahin and Henrikh Mkhitaryan,” reports the Express.
The argument that BVB have moved on is a valid one because Jurgen Klopp has been forced to play a side without Gundogan available for well over a year.
However, the German giants extended Gundogan’s contract while he was in the middle of his injury, which is a clear sign in the strength of belief that Klopp has when it comes to this player.
What works for Gundogan is the fact that the Dortmund midfield, and team in general, has been struggling.
The side’s inconsistency over the first part of the season could see him thrown back into the team once his match sharpness and fitness improves and then he’ll be able to show whether he’s the player he was before his injury spell.
